Manatee Day
This 14th February, Smokey Long Long will be celebrating Manatee Day! She writes:
I will be making little cards and gifts for people who would like one. It's better than valentines because manatees are cuddly and squishy and gentle.I think this is an excellent idea, and I'm looking forward to seeing what delights people share for Manatee Day! Hopefully we'll have some photos to put up soon.

Tiny Loveletters
Finally, a Smallest Art Project got finished!
You remember way, way, back in the old days, when I put in a request for funding for The Smallest Stories? Well, I did that thing, now, except it became awkward little fragments of loveletters written to strangers I've never met.
I did not love my writing for this, but then I sternly reminded myself that Perfect Art is not the point of this project. The point is Making Art Happen!

Request for funding: Yarn bombing
Claire would like to request $6 for a yarn-bombing project.
Funding breakdown:
* $5 for yarn from an op-shop,
* $1 for teabags (tea will be used as an incentive to get someone to teach Claire how to crochet),
* $0 for a borrowed crochet hook.
Project outline:
Claire will yarn bomb some stuff, taking care to only cover inanimate objects (since trees don't enjoy being yarn-bombed). This is Claire's first excursion into public art, and she will be convincing her mother to play, too!

Request for funding: Clothespeg messages
From Claire:
"i'd like five dollars to buy wooden clothespegs, i will then write an inspirational word or message (like "You're beautiful" or "Be happy") on it and clip it to unsuspecting pedestrians, public places, dog collars, and the like. My goal is to spread a little bit of joy in the world, one clothespeg at a time."

Why tiny grants?
I'm guessing that for most people the tiny grants available on this site are not going to make the difference between being able to do a project and not being able to do it. So why bother with tiny grants?
Because here, now, being given money to do something is a signal that someone else values our skills. It shifts our sense of what it is we're doing, even if the amount that changes hands is tiny. It turns a small act we might have done anyway into accredited proof that we are an artist. And we're all artists!
Because it helps to motivate us by creating a sense of obligation. It can (I hope) push people from daydreaming about doing something to actually doing it.
Because it creates connections between people who might not have met otherwise.
But mostly, because I find it amusing. It turns something serious (looking for funding, or offering funding) into a form of play, a game and a performance that anyone can take part in.
